LA BARRACA DEL TIO ARANDA

The renovation project of the Barraca del Tío Arnada, in El Palmar, arises from the desire of the Club Alcatí de Vela Latina to recover a space representative of the culture and traditional architecture of the Albufera. At BTTEstudio Arquitectura, we approach this construction as an exercise of deep respect for the territory, its memory, and its ways of living.

The intervention consists of the comprehensive recovery of a historical barraca, using traditional construction techniques and natural materials such as mud, caña vera, and lime, which have been employed following the artisanal methods inherited from previous generations. The application of lime paint, for example, not only evokes the original finish of these constructions but also ensures the breathability and natural protection of the building.

The roof structure was reconstructed with caña vera woven with local barraqueros and pine wood imported from Soria, respecting the geometry and construction systems typical of the barracas of the Valencian orchard. The entire process has been made possible thanks to collaboration with local artisans and experts in vernacular architecture, preserving knowledge at risk of disappearing.

Beyond the construction aspect, the intervention seeks to revive a space laden with meaning, linked both to the landscape and to the traditions of vela latina, a living symbol of Albufera culture.

The result is a barraca rehabilitated with rigor, sensitivity, and commitment, now transformed into a place of encounter, memory, and cultural transmission. An architecture that honours the past and projects towards the future through sustainability, humility, and rootedness.
